| Grief-stricken? How to deal with pet death
Losing a pet is a subject most pet owners never want to think about, but unfortunately must deal with at some point. I personally had to deal with the loss of two dogs, both more than six years ago. I can honestly say that I have never gotten over it — I've just gotten used to it. Even though one of my beautiful dogs, Shiner, was riddled with cancer, and my other best friend, Hampton, lived to a miraculous 20 years old, there was never a right time to say goodbye. I feel it is so important to let people who are connected to their beloved pets know that this kind of loss is, in most cases, equal to losing a family member. Because, after all, pets are a part of families, aren't they? There are people out there, like wonderful Dr. Stephanie LaFarge, featured in our segment, who are there for you 24/7 to help you cope with this devastating loss.

Amazon.com is challenging French competition law
Of Amazon's $3 billion in third-quarter revenue, about $1 billion came from outside North America. Amazon does not break down sales or active users, which total 72 million globally, among seven international operations. Amazon's defiance has the potential to backfire. Amazon must pay the fine for 30 days if it continues to violate the court order, at which point the court will reconsider the fine and then extend it, lower it or raise it. Cédric Manara, a law professor and e-commerce specialist at Edhec, a French business school in Nice, said he would not be surprised if the court raised the penalty, and that Amazon "had no chance" with its appeal. The law is "really clear," Manara said. "There is no way you can read the text to find a different result.

The Complete Guide to iTunes Movie Rentals, Part 2
Apple's portable video strategy has come a long way since the fifth-generation iPod was released in 2005, supporting only 320 x 240 video content—roughly the equivalent of TV sets sold thirty years earlier. Today, traditional iPod and iPhone models support near-DVD quality content, while the Apple TV almost demands high-definition video. Despite the differences between its various devices, Apple has tried to remain fairly consistent with videos available from the iTunes Store: you could be assured that any video purchased from the iTunes Store would play on all of Apple's devices. While the videos didn't take advantage of the greater potential of the Apple TV, or a computer with a huge, high-resolution monitor, the choice of the 5G iPod's upgraded 640 x 480 resolution as a lowest common denominator avoided consumer confusion over whether Apple's files would play on their devices.
Chocolate: Truth and consequences
Before the Food Guide Pyramid, there were four food groups. The mug I use at work advertises my dietary approach quite clearly: Chocolate-the Fifth Basic Food Group. I eat chocolate every day, which may come as a surprising confession. Im as happy as other chocolate lovers are to learn that chocolate does have a healthy place in our diet, though sometimes the facts do get stretched to fit that chocolate craving. .
Mothers Given Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation Give Birth To ...
When mothers are given multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMN,) they tend to give birth to children who are bigger and heavier. This is contrast to mothers given just iron and folic acid supplementation (IFA). The effect continues into the first three years of the children's lives, according to an article in the February 8 issue of The Lancet, which follows up the Lancet Series on Maternal and Child Undernutrition. While it is already known that low birthweight affects child morbidity and survival rates in developing countries, it is not always clear what effect interventions to increase birthweight can have on child health. Dr David Osrin, UCL Centre for International Health and Development, Institute of Child Health, London, UK and colleagues from Mother and Infant Research Activities, Kathmandu, Nepal, has previously investigated this issue through a randomized controlled trial in Nepal comparing 1,200 women given either IFA (a control) or MMN, a supplement with the recommended daily value of 15 vitamins and minerals, during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
UK: Police on Jersey enter bricked-up room at suspect children's home
Police on the island of Jersey have broken into a bricked-up room at a former children's home which is the focus of a child abuse investigation. Police have already found a child's skull buried on the grounds of the former Haut de la Garenne home. Jersey's deputy police chief, Lenny Harper, says that a dog trained to search for human remains reacted strongly inside the room but there was no immediate indication why. More than 100 people who lived in the home for orphaned or abandoned children have come forward to say they were abused in what authorities believe could be one of Britain's worst child care scandals. Harper said breaching the wall on Wednesday was only the start of a long investigation. .
