Letters: Medical insurance overregulation has trashed the health ...
First she issues a warning to those who are against national health care (like myself for instance). Then she admits her husband is already participating in Medicare: an existing federal national health care system for elderly or disabled citizens. Lastly, she bemoans Medicare because her husband still pays $322 a month for secondary insurance. What is the point of national health care, when it obviously is still necessary to purchase supplemental insurance? Why does Bangert advocate socialized medicine when she effectively argues it has already failed in the form of Medicare? Bob Heineman of Laguna Niguel I don't understand why Marybeth Bangert's husband needs to pay $322 a month for his secondary insurance. During the next open enrollment, Mr.
Valentine's Day in Chicago Evokes City's Gangster Past
St. Valentine's Day Massacre / Broadband - Download (WM) St. Valentine's Day Massacre / Broadband - Watch (WM) St. Valentine's Day Massacre / Dialup - Download (WM) St. Valentine's Day Massacre / Dialup - Watch (WM) Most people think of St. Valentine's Day as a time for lovers, but for crime buffs and those interested in gangland history the day will always be associated with a gruesome crime on the north side of Chicago in 1929. On that day gunmen, supposedly working for gangster Al Capone, used machine-guns to murder seven men from a rival gang. Civic leaders in Chicago would like to leave all that in the past, but, as VOA's Greg Flakus reports from Chicago, people remain fascinated by the era. .
Biting dog unlikely to change his ways
Question: I have a six-year-old purebred German shepherd. I have taken him to several obedience classes. One instructor wouldn't let him come back, and another said he had "issues." He does not like strangers touching him, not even the vet. He will bite. He is also like this with other dogs. I have to put him away when people come to my house and I have to muzzle him. He has never growled or been aggressive with me. I feel like the situation is hopeless and euthanasia is his only option. I have considered it many times because I feel he is dangerous. -- A.H., Toronto Answer: Almost any dog can be trained. The problem is that no amount of training is going to change a dog's nature. You can't get a dog like yours to turn into Lassie and love all two-legged and four-legged creatures if it's not in his nature.
Job-shadowing students watch delivery of puppies at veterinary clinic
Four Craven high school students watched Thursday as a veterinarian performed a caesarean section on a boxer. The dog’s front legs were stretched behind her head. Her hind legs hung from the end of a table. She wiggled and whimpered softly. The students, who were shadowing the doctor, covered their eyes as he cut a hole in the dog’s stomach. They peeked through their hands. The boxer gave birth to three puppies. Covered by warm towels, the puppies wiggled and squeaked softly in a box in an adjoining room. The students giggled at the puppies. Students watched another veterinarian give a dog anesthetic and clean its teeth. The dog shook on the metal table. Two students cried when veterinarians scraped the dog’s teeth with a metal tool. The students asked questions as the doctors worked.
DM philanthropist Levitt dies
When Maddie goes out to ask people for money, its not a pitch, Maxwell said. It hits from the heart. Guy Koenigsberger, a friend of Levitts since the third grade at Hubbell Elementary School in Des Moines, said Levitts greatest legacy is her children. She instilled in them a sense of philanthropy, Koenigsberger said. She was a fascinating woman who did so many things for so many people, many of which arent known. She helped so many people that no one will know about. Levitt challenged her children at an early age to contribute to local causes, said her daughter, Suzie Glazer Burt. When Glazer was young, Levitt sent her out with a red wagon to collect used books for a local charity. Shes not only my mother, she was my best friend, Glazer said.
Obama Slams Smear Photo
Nader advocates cutting back on the military, single payer universal health care, and all the other systemic reforms this country desperately needs. Clinton and Obama are both corporate-dependent and therefore fatally compromised. The United States needs deep reform now not fiddling at the edges as Clinton and Obama would do. So what if Nader doesn 't have a chance to win. He's the only one I can vote for in good conscience. .
Tortures migrant for five days
The trouble started when the girl, working in the house as domestic help for some time, said she had picked the money after she was shown live wires by the owner of the house on Thursday. The owner had found Rs 35,000 missing from a wad of notes worth Rs 50,000. The finger of suspicion was pointed at the girl, who was slapped and confined to a room besides being intimidated till her aunt was summoned. When her aunt arrived on the scene, she was told that the girl had taken away Rs 35,000. They were told to return the money. When the poor family could not do so, the police was informed. The police then picked up Tikka Ram, who was told to produce the money. When he was being allegedly tortured, his family sent a message back home in Uttar Pradesh to sell their land to repay the money and get Tikka Ram released.
