Dog survives avalanche, a week in the rugged backcountry

HELENA, Mont. (AP) Tom Pick saw the frightened look on his dog's face as the snow gave way, but he could only watch as a small avalanche swept the black Labrador retriever down the mountainside. ``I'll probably always see her eyes just looking up at me as she slid down into that thing,'' Pick said in an interview this week. ``You could tell that she was scared.'' That was the start of a weeklong ordeal for 3-year-old Lizzie, who somehow survived a week in the snowy backcountry before being spotted at a lake about 5 miles away. Pick, who had searched the avalanche chute in vain for the dog, said he and his wife are ``both still kind of pinching ourselves, afraid that it's a dream or something. We still don't know exactly what transpired.'' Lizzie was with Pick as he went backcountry skiing Jan.

Rajat Kapoor to host a quiz show on TV

So does he want to act in TV serials too? "No, never," prompt comes the reply.

"I find the economics of TV industry very bizarre, so I don't have any desire to work in these TV serials, he says.

"I have certain sensibility of cinema and so I deliberately do roles which are more true and real. I don't like characters which come out of Mars," he adds.

So what does he think about his next directorial venture "Mithya," which will hit the theatres next month?

"It is a concept based on a conversation between two mythological characters, i.e Narad and Lord Vishnu. During the conversation Lord Vishnu explains Narad the meaning of 'Maya'. It was from there that I got the inspiration for the script of the film," says Kapoor.

The new-age director, whose films, "Ragu Romeo" and "Mixed Doubles" touched a chord with the critic reveals that he wanted to make the film nine years back with Naseeruddin Shah .

Low-calorie sweetener findings leaves experts split

Six months ago, Gloria Ramirez switched from regular soda to diet soda. People told her it would be better for her because she is overweight. And her husband, who has diabetes, drinks diet soda on his doctor's advice.

After hearing about a study released this week that found rats given yogurt with a low-calorie sweetener found in diet soda gained more weight and ate more than rats given yogurt with traditional sugar did, Ramirez said she is thinking about exchanging a case of diet soda for bottled water.

"People think this stuff is helping them," Ramirez, 45, of Riverside, said as she sipped from a can of Diet Pepsi this week in downtown Riverside. "But, in reality, it's not helping them."

Some health experts said people shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Advances in the technology behind lipid synthesis led to the development of structured lipids (SLs). A structured lipid (SL) is a triglyceride that includes both medium (8-12 carbons) and long-chain fatty acids (14-22 carbons) within the same triglyceride. Emulsions including SL have demonstrated increased protein synthesis and increased nitrogen balance (NB) in burned animals The SL has also been superior to medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) and long-chain triglyceride (LCT) emulsions in stimulating muscle protein synthesis in animal studies.

The use of SLs has been primarily limited to clinical and experimental settings whereby it has become necessary to develop medical nutrition therapies that minimize the adverse effects of high lipid feedings and maximize the positive outcomes.
