The pet corner: Golden rescue reunion tail-wagging event

GOLDENS GALORE: About 100 people and 76 rescued golden retrievers had the pleasure of attending last Saturday's third annual Golden Rescue in Naples Reunion. Held at the Ruffin' It Doggie Day Care in Bonita Springs, the event featured dog training demos, a lecture on nutrition, a silent auction and loads of fun for the dozens of goldens who romped in the play room.

It's just about the happiest energy you can imagine to sit in a room with all those happy dogs bounding about. And to think that at some point in their lives, each one was abandoned, abused or homeless. Kind of boggles the mind.

Thanks to GRINInc. founder and president Mary Ellen Metro, of North Naples, and all her volunteers, for putting on such an enjoyable event.

To date, GRIN, started in June 2004, has found homes for 260 goldens.

I need some advice here on what to do with a neighbor's dog, here is ...

About a month ago we got new next door neighbor's and they have a dog. This dog is a pitbull and is usually chained up in the backyard, even in bad weather he is out there with little shelter.

The problem is this dog gets loose and comes into my fenced yard and bothers my dogs. Today I could not allow my dogs off of our deck because he is out there. If I let them out onto the deck ( which is secure) he is at the gate barking and showing aggressive behaviors. There is no one home next door, they are gone all day and most of the nite.

Should I approach these neighbor's and speak to them about the dog? Call animal control and report a loose aggressive dog? Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Gadgets Greenpeace Launches Campaign Against "Toxic" Gaming Consoles

The games consoles market is one of the fastest growing in consumer electronics with over 60 million sold and 14 percent growth last year," Greenpeace explained on its newly launched Clash of the Consoles website. "These consoles contain toxic chemicals and can contribute to the massive growth of electronic waste that's often dumped, causing widespread environmental pollution and health problems for unprotected workers."

Greenpeace has been pushing for the entire electronics manufacturing industry to replace the use of toxic chemicals such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) with safer alternatives, the environmental group believes that none of the consoles produced by the big three are toxic-responsible.

"We've checked how the environmental performances of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo measure up on toxics, recycling and energy use," said Greenpeace.

Response to "Endorsing Ron Paul"

I must admit that I am extremely dismayed at the constant fawning over Ron Paul here on a progressive political discussion site. I have always thought that progressives have great difficulty in prioritizing their efforts, and the fact that we are talking about who is the best Republican candidate seems to prove that point. If half this much effort had been put in here in discussing and supporting Dennis "Could Finish" Kucinich, or trying to draft Al Gore in the New Hampshire primaries, we might actually be making some headway as progressives. Instead, we are floundering in endless and fruitless discussions about whether a libertarian corporatist Republican would put business interests above the interests of citizens. Of course he would, that is the definition of a libertarian Republican. Get the government out of the way so that corporations can do their thing.

Authentic flavors hallmark of Del Toro's Tex Mex Grill

From the moment diners enter Del Toro's Tex Mex Grill in Huntley, their senses are filled with an authentic southwest, San Antonio-style experience.

Mexican art, a south-of-the-border color scheme and memorabilia from the Lone Star State combine for a visual taste of the Tex-Mex experience. More important than the look, however, are the savory aromas and mouth-watering flavors that await Del Toro's customers.

Black History Month begins

Can you imagine going barefoot over 100 miles of rough terrain?" Duke asks.

He was shipped to the U.S. and sold to Foster, who was building up his Natchez farm.

For 20 years, Foster dismissed Rahman's claim of royalty. Then, remarkably, Dr. John Cox spotted Rahman.

Cox had once missed his ship's departure from Africa. He spent six months there and he remembered the hospitality and the young prince.

For 20 years after they met again, Cox tried to buy Rahman's freedom. Foster, with a plantation flourishing under Rahman's leadership, refused.

Finally, when Rahman was 66 and less productive, Foster agreed to a sale under stringent rules. His former slave had to return to Africa. He could not be a freed American.

First, Rahman lingered to raise money to free his children.

Newlywed Kid Rock Leaves Ex Heartbroken

The model-girlfriend Kid Rock left behind to wed Pamela Anderson has poured out her heart to the media, revealing the callous rocker ended their romance with a text message.

Sexy brunette Jill Marie Gulseth dated the rocker for three months earlier this year, until he ditched her to focus on winning his former fiancee Anderson back.

Kid Rock's wooing worked -- he and Anderson wed in St. Tropez, France, last weekend after a whirlwind romance.

But while the rocker, real name Robert Ritchie, was celebrating his nuptials, his ex was nursing a broken heart.

Gulseth tells In Touch magazine, "To be broken up with in a text was just so shocking and upsetting. I cried a lot to friends and family."

The 22-year-old beauty adds, "It's not easy seeing it in the news every day.

Amid debate, grocery chain bans high-fructose corn syrup

There are no Wheat Thins at PCC Natural Markets, no boxes of Kellogg's Raisin Bran, not even any Sara Lee whole grain bagels or Oroweat cracked-wheat hot dog buns.

What customers will find is almost unheard of: a supermarket free of products containing high-fructose corn syrup.

After years of winnowing out the ubiquitous sweetener, the eight-store natural foods co-op announced this week that the rout was complete. While the science behind the move is still the subject of hot debate, the scope is unquestioned.

"The next frontier is here," said Bob Vosburgh, health and wellness editor for the trade publication Supermarket News, who called PCC an industry leader in such controversial topics. PCC apparently is the second significant organization nationally to take on the issue.
