So say Harvard doctors who recently completed a study on women’s diets and fertility.Their findings suggest that certain foods and lifestyle factors can significantly affect hormone levels and improve fertility in women with ovulation problems — a common cause of infertility, says Dr. Jorge Chavarro, lead author of the study, which was published last month in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.What he and his colleagues found supports a growing body of evidence that diet can greatly affect hormone levels, particularly insulin, which then affects fertility.

But even without a major OS upgrade in the wild, savvy users know that you should always have a good, working backup of your Mac's hard drive. One way many users get such a backup is to “clone"—make a mirror image of—their drive. Not only does this approach let you perform an Erase and Install of OS X, using Migration Assistant to restore your data and applications from the clone (as explained by Joe), but it also means that if anything should ever happen to your main hard drive, you can be up and running from the clone in no time. Unfortunately, because of invisible files and permissions issues, you can't simply drag the contents of one volume onto another to get a good copy, as you could in Mac OS 9 and earlier. In the past, my favorite utility for cloning my hard drive has been Carbon Copy Cloner; unfortunately, it's not yet compatible with Tiger.

Ry Cooder doesn't produce CDs for just anyone, but when the legendary gospel singer Mavis Staples came knocking, he couldn't refuse. After all, her father, Roebuck "Pops" Staples, was a mentor to the instrumentalist, best known for orchestrating projects such as the Buena Vista Social Club sessions and the Paris, Texas soundtrack. "When Ry came in," says Staples, 67, "he went straight to the amplifier and ran his hand across it, saying 'Wow, Pop Staples's amplifier'. He plugged his guitar in and as soon as he started strumming and tuning up just as Pops did, I said 'Lord, I'm gonna have a good time'." Staples was in the studio to record a new album called We'll Never Turn Back, a collection of songs about the American civil rights movement.

The association of urinary cadmium with sex steroid hormone ...
Studies investigating the association of cadmium and sex steroid hormones in men have been inconsistent, but previous studies were relatively small. Methods In a nationally representative sample of 1,262 men participating in the morning examination session of phase I (1998-1991) of the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, creatinine corrected urinary cadmium and serum concentrations of sex steroid hormones were measured following a standardized protocol. Results After adjustment for age and race-ethnicity, higher cadmium levels were associated with higher levels of total testosterone, total estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin, estimated free testosterone, and estimated free estradiol (each p-trend <0.05). After additionally adjusting for smoking status and serum cotinine, none of the hormones maintained an association with urinary cadmium (each p-trend >0.05).
Former Slovenian president dies of cancer
Former Slovenian President Janez Drnovsek succumbed to cancer at his home overnight at the age of 57, his office said on Saturday.
Drnovsek did not seek reelection and handed over the presidency to his successor Danilo Tuerk last December as he had been suffering from cancer since 1999.
Drnovsek, who served as prime minister for most of the 1990s and president in the last five years, was the main driver in Slovenia's transition to a market economy and entry into the European Union and NATO.
His battle for life started with a surgery to remove one of his kidneys in 1999. When the modern medicine could not stop the spreading of cancer in late 2003, he resorted to a reclusive lifestyle on vegetarian food in a village. Yet, the new way of life and healers disappointed him.
