| NY calorie rule applies to cocktails
Put down that margarita, and back away from the bar. A new city regulation that requires chain restaurants to display calorie information also covers cocktails, sodas and other beverages that appear on menus. "Drinks are almost the forgotten calories," said Cathy Nonas, director of physical activity and nutrition programs for the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. "It's almost a side thought to the meal." The city Board of Health voted unanimously last month to approve the regulation, a new version of a law that had been struck down by a judge last year. The law, scheduled to go into effect on March 31, applies to restaurants with more than 15 outlets across the country. That includes fast-food places such as McDonald's and sit-down chains such as Olive Garden and T.G.I.

Boulder: Impeach Bush?
The Coloradoan says: "Rising crime, growing traffic congestion, and overall, a diminishing quality of life in Boulder. Crimes of rape and assault go unsolved. High paying jobs are going away. And Instead of focusing on Boulder issues, the council wastes time and money on meaningless gestures." Because as more cities pass this measure, the more meaningful it becomes. Especially cities that are disparate on so many levels. Coloradoan also said: "To what point? So they can encourage even more companies to leave Boulder?" Attracting business is not the end all and be all of every city. Some cities would prefer a more localized economy, rather than depend on companies who decide to live there because of the tax advantages - and thus, have no real loyalty to that city and will have no problem picking up stakes and leaving if they get a higher bid one day.

Tips for cutting back on sodium
To cut down on the amount of sodium in your diet: Eat out less often. Choose restaurants where food is cooked to order and ask questions about or make requests for food preparation. Ask for proteins grilled without marinades or added salt; oil and vinegar on the side in place of prepared salad dressings; skip the soy or dipping sauce that arrives with sushi. Add more foods containing potassium to daily eating. Potassium-rich foods also help to blunt the effects of salt on blood pressure. Good sources of potassium are dried fruits; strawberries, bananas, cantaloupe and oranges; beets, greens and tomatoes; dried beans; turkey, fish and beef. In the meat department, read labels to determine if fresh meat or poultry has been salted, marinated or injected with a salty solution. Look for canned vegetables packed without salt, or rinse and drain canned vegetables and beans to reduce sodium content before cooking.
Citizens help CHP catch fleeing suspect
Several bystanders helped capture a man fleeing from the California Highway Patrol this afternoon in Chico. Officer Bob Boyer said he was driving south on Highway 99 just before 1 p.m. when he spotted a blue pickup speeding north near Entler Avenue. Boyer turned around and clocked the vehicle, a Dodge Dakota, at 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. When he tried to stop it, the driver exited at the Park/Skyway off-ramp and turned east onto Skyway. The truck went over a curb and crashed into hedges near a building housing the Bank of America and Clearwire Communications. The driver, identified as Sammy Sofar Grijalva Lenz, ran from the crash. A customer coming out of Bank of America began chasing him, as Boyer tried to get ahead of the suspect in his patrol car. With the help of motorists who tried to cut the suspect off, technicians at the Les Schwab Tire Center on Notre Dame, and the bank customer, the man was cornered and taken into custody.
Stop Chasing High-Tech Cheaters
This is in an impoverished, inner city school, mind you; 92% of those kids went on to college. I receive emails from many of them still, saying that the education they received FROM US (with our pathetic technology) prepared them better for the rigor of academia they have met in university than anything they could imagine. Possibly, they say this because they were not exposed to, and can therefore not imagine, anything else. Or because they were my pets then, hence the emails now. But the fact that 92% of them went on with their educations, and 75% of them stayed in higher ed (as opposed to those who flunk out after failing to make it out of their Bridge program), I think, says something. 2) I now teach in a district with a generous complement of technology and a strong commitment to training our kids to work in a world whose technology does not even exist yet.

Good Earth stores appeal to health-minded
The FDA doesn't need any more power. It's about control at this point." Along with food supplements, organically-grown food is one of the store's specialties, which complies with federal U.S. Department of Agriculture rules that organic food must be certified independently, he said. "It was a good move," he said of the rules. "They gave consumers confidence that (food advertised as organic) is organic," he said. The store also supports local farmers by offering locally-grown produce in season. Each store measures about 10,000 square feet. The newly constructed American Fork store replaced a couple of old homes on Main Street. Other stores are in Provo, Orem, Sandy and Riverdale. A big difference in health food stores today, vs. the 1970s when health awareness was still in its infancy, is the availability of specialty items, Howard said, such as gluten-free products.
