Get Schooled

These kids are going to get a very brutal wake-up call someday and the results ain't gonna be pretty at all.

In fact, we're already seeing the results of some of this stuff. Some of these people I see coming out of college now just can't believe it when they're told something is merely "good," because they've been told they're nothing less than fantastic all the time since birth … and heaven forbid if they hear something they do truly isn't even "good," but "not so good," to "bad" or even "horrible."

Local autonomy at heart of road-related tax issue

As the Diet begins deliberations on a tax bill for fiscal 2008 that includes a plan to maintain the provisional higher gasoline tax and vehicle-related tax rates for another 10 years, we should consider the issues of decentralization and local autonomy in discussing how to use revenues from the road-related taxes.

At a debate session with the Democratic Party of Japan held last Tuesday in Tokyo, Miyazaki Gov. Hideo Higashikokubaru said: "Considering its dearth of expressways and roads, Miyazaki Prefecture is said to be a desert. As roads are necessary to attract businesses and transport patients, road construction and maintenance are critical to support people's livelihoods and the economy."

Meanwhile, Acting DPJ President Naoto Kan said the provisional extra tax rates should be abolished, and road-related tax revenues, which currently are designated as special revenue sources for road construction and maintenance, should be integrated with the general account.

More dangerous dogs on our streets

But you can "never blame the dog for its behaviour", he added.

The NHS statistics show the number of dog attack victims in England attending A&E has risen by 43 per cent in the last four years to nearly 3,800 a year.

Hospitalisation of children and young people has risen by a fifth, with 58 per cent more adults being admitted to A&E as a result of dog attacks over the same four-year period.

The hospital admission statistics revealed a strong regional variation.

The Greater London Authority, Metropolitan Police, RSPCA and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home are launching a campaign on responsible dog ownership.

Wandsworth is among the local councils using bylaws and ASBOs to deal with owners who fail to control their dogs.

Liberal Democrat health spokesman Norman Lamb called for a review of the Dangerous Dogs Act, saying more needed to be done to make people aware of the risks of irresponsible dog ownership.

suggests a beneficial possible side effect if he does

His inability to sustain his early and successful fund raising pace suggests that that reality is beginning to dawn on the Illinois Senator's donor base.

Gore need only to whistle and he will find Hollywood celebrities falling all over themselves in an effort to help him raise funds.

Gore's own relationships with Democratic donors run deep and long standing. With environmentalists making up a large segment of Democratic Party money, Gore would quickly rise to the top of the fund raising list.

Does he have enough time to organize in the early primary states?

Gore's late entry and national celebrity gives him an ability to avoid the micro-primary and caucus in Iowa and New Hampshire.

He can go focus on the big states of Michigan and Florida and come out ahead.

At the Grammys, too much rehab

Why write about Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lynn and Britney Spears when I could offer my opinion on more important issues, such as why the dining halls suck so much or why Mother Nature hates Binghamton (one more severe weather warning and I'm moving to Sioux Falls, South Dakota). Unfortunately, this column will have to forgo these previously mentioned concerns in order to address a certain singer's success at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards last Sunday (I'm sure you missed it).Amy Winehouse had six Grammy nominations, one each for "Record of the Year," "Album of the Year," "Song of the Year," "Best New Artist," "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" and "Best Pop Album." She won all except "Album of the Year," which was taken home by Herbie Hancock (some old-timer who plays the piano). The troubled singer was not even present at the televised show and performed via satellite from London.I'm always the first to congratulate someone on their success, but this time, I'm going to have to voice my disagreement.

In the past, the challenge for the monks was simply to find their daily food. That has changed now, but in its place has come the challenge of maintaining the monastery’s spirituality [But] in contrast to the way that the Bedouin’s life has been turned upside down, the monastery has been able to maintain its traditional way of life.”

The EU, meanwhile, plans to stay involved in the South Sinai with a 64 million ($79 million) development program for the whole region. The program is slated to tackle issues from environmental awareness to watershed management and marketing alternative destinations to relieve the pressure on the coastal areas.

Watch your step

The other road to Cairo from the east coast of the Sinai runs south out of Sharm. As it carves into the red granite hills that once guarded the area’s southern approach, you can see the slowly fading remnants of fortified trenches cut into the rock, reminders of the years when the peninsula was hotly contested territory.

Beef Recall Includes Meat Sent To Some Fast Food Restaurants

It's the biggest beef recall in history with 143-million pounds getting pulled. A meat company is now under investigation for animal abuse, some of which was caught on tape. The undercover video shows cows at a California slaughter house too sick or injured to walk on their own, a clear violation of federal inspection laws. Now the beef, produced over a 2-year period is being recalled. Some of the beef was used in school lunch programs, including some in the Northside School District."As far as we know, none of it was served to students at all, said NISD spokesman Pascual Gonzalez. "We checked the boxes, the case number by lot number, and all of that has been accounted for and is in the warehouse."The company also provided beef to two fast food chains, Jack-In-The-Box and In-N-Out restaurants, and grocery stores.Since eating fast food is a way of life for many of us, News 4 did some checking to find out if any of the recalled beef was sent to any Jack-In-The-Box locations in San Antonio.

Kosovo sends out a different message

With only five days to go, there are posters everywhere: at the metro stations, in the bus shelters and on banners across the streets. Proudly formal, they have the eagle crest and the simple fact of the 2 March election against the background of the red, white and blue Russian flag.
