Interview with John Byrne Cooke

[I continue my series of interviews with some of the most interesting thinkers of our time with John Byrne Cooke. Mr. Cooke wrote the book on the subject of the history of reporting of America's wars from the Revolution to the so-called war on terror and how the press has interacted with government efforts aimed at suppressing or censoring it over the course of our history. The full interview follows below, after the jump, and is also cross-posted at the talking dog. As always, thanks to Joe and Team TMV for the opportunity to present these interviews here.]

John Byrne Cooke, a graduate of Harvard College and son of legendary journalist Alistair Cooke, is the author of a number of historical novels, articles and other media. His latest book is Reporting the War: Freedom of the Press from the American Revolution to the War on Terrorism.

Anderson County Council won’t budge on incentives for Kohl’s ...

It's nice to know that these 4 County Council Representatives don't care about new jobs in Anderson County and they don't care about the City of Anderson getting almost a half million dollars in new revenue. All they care about is their own personal agendas. When the 4 of you run for re-election I will be supporting whoever runs against you, at least there is a chance that they will care about the residents of this county. And stop using the water cost as a crutch for your own agenda. The county people want city water but they don't want to pay city property taxes. They cannot have their cake and eat it to. City residents should NOT have to absorb the cost of running water lines out into the county. If you want CITY WATER in the County than you better expect to pay for it.

Only talent influx will help Toronto FC

Every Major League Soccer club's cauldron is beginning to bubble as the warm-up to the new season begins. But I can bet you there is no pot quite so hot as Toronto FC's.

Here's a club that got off to a scalding start to its inaugural MLS season. A new stadium that sold out every time the team played instantly establishing it as a Toronto landmark.

Trouble was, it couldn't do a thing on the field. Coach Mo Johnston couldn't conjour a single goal out of the team he had built until 558 minutes into the season. And it had another stretch of 824 goalless minutes, an MLS record.

Fire alarm: The cost

Long Islanders are paying big-city prices to preserve a small-town volunteer fire service that struggles to keep pace with the growing demands placed upon it.

High cost of fire protection

Long Island is the last densely populated region in America served almost exclusively by volunteers. Their service is cherished by many residents as the ideal of what a community should be, neighbor caring for neighbor. But between 1980 and 2000, the costs to taxpayers of supporting fire districts more than doubled after adjusting for inflation, growing almost three times as fast as spending by other local governments.

With 179 different agencies -- each with its own rules, budgets and closely held membership lists -- fire protection on Long Island is so fragmented that it has long defied analysis.

BCCTA tackles grant, personnel issues

Speaking of which, I find it extremely unprofessional of you blogging your opinions on this site. Did you per chance use company time to do your blogging? Are our tax paying monies which, by extension, fund your position being spent for you to surf the 'net during business hours? Even if you are blogging on your own time, your participation here is highly unprofessional, and I resent it. " .

Flats on children’s park

May it be biting cold or hot summers; they have no expectations or love left for the children, who for their own convenience have deserted them.

Trying to cover herself with warm clothes, Raj Jain, an octogenarian, said the winters are the worst. Rajs only daughter ditched her for a piece of property. She has been staying here for more than seven years now. She gets along very well with other fellow inmates. Praising the old age home management, Raj said they had been provided with blankets, beds, hot water etc. to brave the chill. What else can you expect? It is better to come here than to lead a miserable life with children, she added.

A few inmates still keep on waiting for their children to take them back. One of the trustees of the ashram, Pawan Goel, said there was no dearth of Samaritans in the city.

Care and Feeding of IRA

There are at least 6 mistakes to avoid when contributing to your IRA.

The first is making only one contribution at a time. After making last year's contribution, you should start working on this year's contribution right away.

If you can already come up with an extra $5,000 now, and fully contribute for 2008, great. That means you'll always be one year ahead. Over time, your final account balance could total thousands more due to the added time your money has spent in the market.

If making both last year's contribution and this year's contribution is not feasible, make last year's contribution, then start making monthly contributions toward 2008. At $416 per month, you'll get close to the $5,000 IRA contribution limit by year's end.

Getting your contribution in as early as possible allows your funds to increase in value.

Friday Look Ahead: What's happening in Vegas?

But at some point Saturday I suspect I'll start wishing I was at The Orleans and attending the Las Vegas Invitational, just like last year when I saw Kansas beat Florida in an overtime thriller.

This season, it's North Carolina vs. Louisville for the championship Saturday night (assuming there is no stupid upset Friday night). The game will be played in an arena connected to the casino, a bonus for fans because there's just something cool about leaving your room, walking downstairs, eating dinner, grabbing a drink, playing blackjack for two hours, placing a bet on your team of choice in the sports book and then moseying on over to watch yourself win or lose money on a game featuring two Hall of Fame coaches that is unfolding right before your eyes, all while never having to so much as go outside.
